Names of Allah Al-Ghaffar Al-Afuww and At-Tawwab

As the days of Ramadan pass, our hopes and duas that our sins will be forgiven, that Allah will guide us to the straight path, and that He will enlighten our hearts, minds, and eyes grow stronger. We draw closer to Allah by calling upon Him through His Most Beautiful Names and Attributes, including Al-Ghaffar, Al-Afuww, and At-Tawwab. Allah said in His Holy Quran, Surah Al-Nisaa, Aya 110,

”And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seeks Allah’s Forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful”

If a believer commits sins, as we all do, we should offer sincere repentance and seek Allah’s forgiveness. We recall the Names of Allah, such as Al-Ghaffar, Al-Afuww, and At-Tawwab. These Beautiful Names bring ease and peace to our hearts, helping us to repent and feel secure in the presence of Allah.

al-Ghafar

(The Great-Forgiver)

The Forgiver, The Ever-Forgiving, The Most-Forgiving

He is the One Who forgives the sins of His slaves time and time again. He sees our sins and disobedience, yet He still forgives and accepts the repentance of those who sincerely turn to Him. He shows never-ending compassion and forgiveness, no matter how big or small the sin. He is the Most Forgiving and loves to forgive. It is never too late for anyone to repent. In this blessed month, when the devils are chained, the obstacles and enemies of the sons of Adam, you can seek Allah’s forgiveness and mercy during this blessed time.

Allah promised His slaves: “But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.” You just need to overcome laziness. You have an amazing opportunity this Ramadan to read the Qur’an, engage in dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and perform Qiyam al-Layl (night prayer).

Al-‘Afuww
(The Pardoner)
The Oft-Pardoning, The Effacer of Sins, The Eliminator of Sins

Al-Afuww is the One Who grants extensive forgiveness. He pardons sins and erases all traces of wrongdoing. The difference between forgiving a sin and effacing it is that, in the latter case, no trace or record of the offence remains. It is as if it had never happened. A sin may be forgiven while its traces remain, but through Allah’s Name, Al-Afuww, all traces of sin are erased. One of the signs of His mercy is that He has blessed us with the month of Ramadan, giving us an opportunity to return to Him, strive to improve ourselves, and hasten to do good deeds.

During the month of Ramadan, we often repeat this dua:

“O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.”

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

At-Tawab
(The Ever-Pardoning)
The Acceptor of Repentance, The Ever-Relenting, The Acceptor of our Return

At-Tawwab is the One Who grants repentance to whomever He wills among His creation and accepts their repentance. Before seeking forgiveness, we need to repent and remember that Allah grants us the opportunity to turn back to Him. Through His Name, At-Tawwab, Allah reminds us that He welcomes our repentance and allows us to return to Him.

Allah is Merciful and turns towards His servants, giving us the opportunity to draw closer to Him. If you can acknowledge your sins and shortcomings, it is a sign that your heart is alive with iman and love for Allah. Allah sends a beautiful message to His believers in the Qur’an, saying, “Allah wants to accept your repentance” (Qur’an 4:27). It is never too late to seek your Lord’s forgiveness. May Allah enlighten our hearts with iman and fear of Him. May Allah strengthen our hearts in His religion.

May Allah guide us to remember His Beautiful Names, seek His forgiveness, and turn to Him with sincere repentance. May He accept our good deeds, forgive our sins, and help us make the most of Ramadan. Ameen.
