It was in His Divine Wisdom to send Messengers to mankind as warners and bringers of glad tidings. People were in desperate need of someone to teach them how to worship Allah and to lead them out of darkness into light by the grace of Allah. This mission is regarded as one of the toughest undertakings ever, as it is like sailing against the tide. For this reason, Allah supported each Prophet with miracles, angels, and companions. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was no exception; he was sent to all of humanity as the Seal of the Prophets, supported and strengthened by the companions around him. The companions (Sahaba) (may Allah be pleased with them) are the elite of the Ummah and the best of people after the Prophets. They are the best of people after the Prophets and Messengers in terms of knowledge, deeds, faith, and their companionship with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), as well as their Jihad for the sake of Allah and in calling others to His religion.

Who is a Sahabi?

A Sahabi (Companion) is anyone who met the Prophet (ﷺ)(peace be upon him) while believing in him and died upon that faith. This includes those who did not physically see him, as the lack of vision might be due to an external reason, such as blindness, even if that meeting was in a constructive sense, such as an infant in the cradle. Certain individuals fall outside the scope of this companionship, including; those who embraced Islam during the Prophet’s (ﷺ) lifetime but never met or saw him; those who appeared to embrace Islam only outwardly, such as the hypocrites; those who met the Prophet (ﷺ) as non-believers and only accepted Islam after his passing; and finally, those who met him as believers but later apostatized and died in a state of apostasy. The exact number of the companions cannot be precisely defined, as their names and figures were not preserved or recorded in specific registers. Furthermore, they were scattered across various cities and distant provinces.

The Unmatched Merit of the Sahaba

Both the Holy Quran and the Sunnah emphasize the immense value and high status of the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) companions. Glorified is He, Who affirmed the virtue of His Prophet’s companions, testifying to the purity of their hearts and the excellence of their deeds. He expressed His pleasure with them, and they with Him, promising them His Gardens, His forgiveness, and the magnificent reward of that supreme triumph. Allah said in Surah Al-Fath: 29; ”Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Those with him are firm against the unbelievers, yet kind amongst themselves. You see them kneeling, prostrating, seeking Allah’s blessings and His approval. Their marks are on their faces from the effects of prostration. Such is their example in the Torah, and their example in the Gospel: like a seed that sprouts, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem, delighting the planters. Through them, He infuriates the unbelievers. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do good works forgiveness and a splendid reward.”

The Ten Companions Promised Paradise

Among these noble companions—and indeed, the most virtuous of them all—are the ten who were given the glad tidings of Paradise. They are known by this title because they were all mentioned together in a single hadith, receiving the glad tidings of Paradise at once. Otherwise, many other companions were also promised Paradise, and indeed, all of the Sahaba are destined for Jannah. They represent the best of this Ummah after the Prophet (ﷺ), comprising the four Rightly Guided Caliphs alongside six others from the foremost, earliest believers. Narrated by Abdul Rahman bin Awf: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Umar is in Paradise, Uthman is in Paradise, Ali is in Paradise, Talha is in Paradise, Az-Zubayr is in Paradise, Abdul Rahman ibn Awf is in Paradise, Sa’d is in Paradise, Sa’id is in Paradise, and Abu Ubaida ibn Al-Jarrah is in Paradise.” We have previously dedicated detailed features to each of these extraordinary figures.
