The Scale of Deeds on the Day of Judgment
Abu Dharr (RAA) quoted the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, among what he narrated from Allah, the Most High, that He has said: “O My slaves, I have made oppression unlawful for Myself, and I have made it unlawful among you, so do not oppress one another.” (Related by Muslim). Based on this Hadith, we believe that Allah will judge people fairly. Each human being will see the amount of his good and bad deeds before Allah judges him, and he will see the results of his deeds on the Scale of Deeds.
Allah describes His judgment to mankind as:
”And your Lord does injustice to no one.” (وَلَا يَظْلِمُ رَبُّكَ أَحَدًا) (Surah Al-Kahf 18:49).
Everyone will be judged according to his deeds.
One of the scenes of the Day of Judgment is the Scale. The Scale in the hereafter is used to weigh people’s deeds. It is an accurate Scale that can neither increase nor decrease people’s deeds. Only Allah has full knowledge of this Scale.
The Scale of Deeds on the Day of Judgment
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas said that good and bad deeds will be weighed on a Scale that has a tongue and two pans. A believer will be brought forward in a good state with his deeds, and when his deeds are placed in one of the pans, it will become heavier than the other. This is mentioned in the verse: {…So as for those whose Scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise).} [7:8].
The deeds of an unbeliever will be brought in a bad and repulsive state, and when they are placed in the pan of the Scale, they will have no weight, and ultimately, he will be thrown into the Fire (Hell). No one can compare the shape of this Scale to anything that can be seen in this dunya, but our faith in Allah is built upon certain fundamentals. Believing in the first link of the chain leads to believing in the next, and so on.
In addition, there are many ayahs that speak about the Scale on the Day of Judgment. In Surah Al-Anbiya (21:47), Allah says: ”And We place the Scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.” (وَنَضَعُ الْمَوَازِينَ الْقِسْطَ لِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ فَلَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَيْئًا ۖ وَإِن كَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ أَتَيْنَا بِهَا ۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِنَا حَاسِبِينَ).
Belief in the Scale is part of belief in the unseen. This reality of the Day of Judgment should motivate us to push our boundaries and make the pan of good deeds heavier than the other. Allah, by His favour, has made some easy opportunities for us to increase our good deeds.

سُبْحَانَ اَللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اَللَّهِ اَلْعَظِيمِ
Abu Hurairah (RAA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Two phrases that are dear to the Compassionate One, light on the tongue, and heavy on the Scale are: ‘How perfect Allah is and I praise Him; and How perfect Allah is, the Most Great.’” Agreed upon.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Purity is half of iman (faith). ‘Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah)’ fills the Scales, and ‘Subhan-Allah (how far is Allah from every imperfection)’ and ‘Al-hamdulillah (praise be to Allah)’ fill that which is between heaven and earth.”
Seeking the Prophet’s Intercession
An-Nadr bin Anas bin Malik narrated from his father, who said:
“I asked the Prophet (s.a.w) to intercede for me on the Day of Judgement. He said: ‘I am the one to do so.'” [He said:] “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Then where shall I seek you?’ He said: ‘Seek me; the first time you should seek me is on the Sirat.'” [He said:] “I said: ‘If I do not meet you upon the Sirat?’ He said: ‘Then seek me at the Mizan.’ I said: ‘And if I do not meet you at the Mizan?’ He said: ‘Then seek me at the Hawd, for indeed I will not be missed at these three locations.'”
We pray that Allah guides us to the best of deeds and that He guides us to the deeds that will increase the weight of our good deeds. We pray that the Prophet Muhammad intercedes for us on the Day of Judgment.
