The Story of the People of the Cave

    Another inspiring story from the Holy Quran is the story of the People of the Cave, through which Allah challenges the arguments and excuses of those who rejected Islam and the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). In Surah Al-Kahf, verse 9, Allah begins the story by addressing Prophet Muhammad and says:

Do you think that the people of the Cave and the Inscription (the news or the names of the people of the Cave) were a wonder among Our Signs?

أَمْ حَسِبْتَ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْكَهْفِ وَالرَّقِيمِ كَانُوا مِنْ آيَاتِنَا عَجَبًا

They were a small group of youths who faced a great Fitnah (test). They were righteous and believed in Allah, rejecting the worship of false deities. Their people persecuted them, but Allah gave them strength and resilience in the face of persecution. To avoid torture or religious persecution, they decided to hide in a cave along with their dog. They prayed to Allah, asking for His mercy, and said, “Our Lord! Bestow upon us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!” They knew they would be in great danger if they were discovered.

Allah’s Protection of the People of the Cave

    Allah responded to their duas and calls, and He put them to sleep for three hundred and nine years, as mentioned in the Quran. Allah led them to a cave whose entrance faced north, and He protected them within it. When the sun rose, it declined to the right of their cave, and when it set, it turned away from them to the left, while they lay in the midst of the cave. This was a sign from Allah for anyone who has a heart and a sound mind.

During this long period, their bodies could have been badly affected, but Allah took responsibility for preserving them. Allah turned them from one side to the other, and this was not only for them but also for their dog, which stayed at the entrance of the cave. Allah preserved its body as well. Allah described this miracle and said, “Had you looked at them, you would certainly have turned back from them in flight, and would certainly have been filled with awe of them.”

The Awakening of the People of the Cave

    Then Allah awakened them, and they began to question one another, asking, “How long have we been sleeping?” They thought they had been asleep for only a day or part of a day, and they agreed that only Allah knew for sure how much time had passed. They needed food and drink, so they sent one of them to the market to get what they needed with an old coin from their time, unaware that more than three hundred years had passed. They warned him to be cautious and not to disclose his identity. But Allah had a different plan for them. People had to know about their miracle and their story.

Once the people at the market saw the old coin, they began wondering about the man’s identity. Some said that they had been found sleeping, while others said that they had been found dead. Their exact number is not known. 

Lessons from the Story of the People of the Cave

    Allah allowed them to be discovered to teach all of humanity that Allah’s promise is true and that there can be no doubt about the Hour. Thus, if there is one lesson from this story to be learned, it is to hold firmly to your Deen and beliefs. If you seek Allah’s Protection, Allah will help you. Your religion is what makes you strong, not people. Seeking the pleasure of Allah will bring you true happiness in this life and the Hereafter
