The Story of Prophet Shu’aib (AS)
Throughout history, every nation that was destroyed shared certain causes that led to its downfall. Among the most significant were financial corruption, dishonest business practices, and economic injustice. For this reason, today’s article explores the story of a nation that was punished not only for rejecting its prophet but also for its widespread corruption. The Story of Prophet Shu’aib (AS) (AS) highlights the importance of honesty in financial and commercial dealings, alongside the fundamental call to worship Allah alone (Tawḥīd).
Prophet Shu’aib (AS)
Historians have differed regarding the details of Prophet Shu’aib’s lineage. However, the most widely accepted opinion is that his ancestry traces back to Madyan (Midian), the son of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (AS). It has also been reported that his mother or grandmother was a daughter of Prophet Lut (AS), although this view is not definitively established. Prophet Shu’aib (AS) is regarded as one of the four Arab prophets. This is based on a narration in which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to Abu Dharr (RA) while mentioning the prophets and messengers:
“Four of the prophets were Arabs: Hud, Salih, Shu’aib, and your Prophet, O Abu Dharr.”
(Narrated by Ibn Hibban.)
Shu’aib the eloquent preacher (Khateeb)
Prophet Shu’aib (AS) was renowned for his eloquence and powerful manner of preaching. Whenever the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned him, he would say:
“That was the eloquent preacher (Khateeb) among the prophets because of the way he addressed and reasoned with his people.”
This title reflects Prophet Shu’aib’s exceptional wisdom, persuasive speech, and patient dialogue with his people as he repeatedly called them to worship Allah alone and abandon their corrupt and dishonest practices. Allah sent Prophet Shu’aib (AS) to the people of Madyan (Midian). The people of Madyan were also referred to in the Quran as the People of the Thicket (Ashab Al-Aykah). Al-Aykah refers to a dense grove of intertwined trees, which they are reported to have revered and worshipped. Because of this association, they became known as the People of the Thicket.
People of Prophet Shu’aib (AS)
Allah says:
“And the companions of the thicket were indeed wrongdoers.” (Quran 15:78)
The people of Madyan were known for widespread corruption and injustice. They violated the rights of others by stealing, oppressing people, and engaging in dishonest business practices. Fraud and deception had become a normal part of their trade.
One of their most notorious sins was cheating in weights and measures. Whether buying or selling, they manipulated the scales to gain unlawful profit. Allah sent Prophet Shu’aib (AS) to reform these corrupt practices, saying:
“And to Madyan We sent their brother Shu’aib. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So give full measure and weight, and do not deprive people of what is rightfully theirs. Do not spread corruption in the land after it has been set right. That is better for you if you are believers. And do not sit on every path, threatening people and turning those who believe away from the way of Allah, seeking to make it appear crooked. Remember when you were few and He multiplied you, and see how was the end of the corrupters.'” (Quran 7:85–86)
Prophet Shu’aib’s (AS) Call to His People
Allah sent Prophet Shu’aib (AS) to his people to call them to the religion of Islam and to worship Allah alone, without associating any partners with Him. Along with inviting them to Tawhid, he warned them against the corruption and injustices they had fallen into. He commanded them to deal fairly in trade, give full measure and weight, and never deprive people of their rights. He also forbade them from ambushing travelers, blocking the roads, and unlawfully taking people’s wealth.
Most of the people of Madyan mocked Prophet Shu’aib (AS), rejected his message, and refused to follow him despite his sincere warnings. They responded with ridicule, saying:
“They said, ‘O Shu’aib, does your prayer command you that we should abandon what our forefathers worshipped or that we should not do with our wealth whatever we please? Indeed, you are the forbearing, the rightly guided!'” (Quran 11:87)
Despite their rejection, a small group of people believed in Prophet Shu’aib (AS) and accepted his message.
His People Threatened Him with Death
Despite their rejection, Prophet Shu’aib (AS) never gave up calling his people to the truth. However, the more he preached, the more they mocked him. They falsely claimed that they could not understand much of what he was saying, demanding that he repeat his message out of arrogance and ridicule rather than a genuine desire to understand. Eventually, their mockery turned into open threats, and they warned him that they would stone him to death were it not for the protection of his tribe. Allah says:
“They said, ‘O Shu’aib, we do not understand much of what you say, and indeed we consider you weak among us. Were it not for your family, we would have stoned you. And you are not mighty against us.'” (Quran 11:91)
The Punishment of Prophet Shu’aib’s People
After patiently calling his people to the truth, reasoning with them, and warning them of Allah’s punishment, Prophet Shu’aib (AS) saw nothing but arrogance and persistent rejection. He then declared:
“And O my people, work according to your position; indeed, I am working. You will soon know upon whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him and who is a liar. And wait; indeed, I am waiting with you.” (Quran 11:93)
The renowned scholar Ibn Kathir summarized the punishment of the people of Prophet Shu’aib (AS) in Al-Bidayah wa Al-Nihayah, explaining that Allah combined several forms of punishment upon them because of their persistent disbelief and corruption. He wrote that they were struck by a violent earthquake that left them lifeless, followed by a mighty blast that silenced every voice. They were also overshadowed by a dark cloud from which a blazing punishment descended upon them. Ibn Kathir further explained that the Quran mentions different aspects of their punishment in different surahs, with each description fitting the context and emphasis of the respective passage.
For example, the Quran describes different aspects of their punishment in different surahs. In Surah Al-A’raf, Allah says:
“So the earthquake seized them, and they became lifeless bodies in their homes.” (Quran 7:91)
In Surah Hud, Allah mentions another aspect of their destruction:
“And the wrongdoers were seized by the mighty blast, and they became lifeless bodies in their homes.” (Quran 11:94)
The exact time and place of Prophet Shu’aib’s (AS) death are not authentically established in the Quran or the Sunnah. After fulfilling his mission and conveying Allah’s message with patience and sincerity, he passed away. His story continues to remind Muslims that true success lies in worshipping Allah alone, upholding justice, and maintaining integrity in every aspect of life, especially in financial and social dealings.
