Sayyiduna Uthman ibn Affan was well known for his generosity. He spent his wealth for the sake of Allah and greatly supported Islam. He devoted his entire life to serving the religion. When the Muhājirūn migrated to Medina, they found that there was no well providing fresh water suitable for them. There was a well known as Bir Rumah, owned by a man who sold its water to the Muslims at a high price. The Muslims complained to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about this hardship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ approached the owner of the well and said, ”Will you sell this well in exchange for a well in Jannah?” However, the man replied, ”I only own this well for myself and my children.” When Sayyiduna Uthman heard about the matter, he purchased the well from its owner. He then came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, ”Will I receive the same promise?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, ”Yes.” After purchasing the well, Sayyiduna Uthman made its water freely available to everyone, turning it into a public source of water for all Muslims.
the Battle of Tabuk
The Battle of Tabuk took place in 9 AH and became known as Jaish Al-Usrah (the Army of Hardship). It was given this name because the Muslims faced severe hardship during the expedition, including extreme heat, scarce resources, and poor harvests. The difficulty of this campaign was so great that it was referenced in the Quran in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 117;
”Allah has already forgiven the Prophet and the Muhajireen and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty after the hearts of a party of them had almost inclined [to doubt], and then He forgave them. Indeed, He was to them Kind and Merciful.
The Battle of Tabuk was the final military expedition led by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. During this difficult time, the Prophet ﷺ encouraged the Muslims to contribute toward preparing the army and said, ”Whoever equips the Army of Hardship will be granted Paradise.” The Companion Abdur-Rahman ibn Khabbab narrated: ”I witnessed the Prophet ﷺ urging the people to support the Army of Hardship. Uthman ibn Affan stood and said, ”O Messenger of Allah, I will provide one hundred camels with their saddles and waterskins for the sake of Allah.” The Prophet ﷺ continued encouraging the people to donate, so Uthman stood again and said, ”O Messenger of Allah, I will provide two hundred camels with their saddles and waterskins for the sake of Allah.” Then Uthman stood once more and said, ”O Messenger of Allah, I will provide three hundred camels with their saddles and waterskins for the sake of Allah.” I then saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ descend from the minbar saying, ”Nothing will harm Uthman after this day. Nothing will harm Uthman after this day.”
Sayyiduna Uthman Ibn affan’s achievements
When Sayyiduna Umar ibn Al-Khattab was on his deathbed, he appointed a council of six Companions—Ali ibn Abi Talib, Uthman ibn Affan, Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, Az-Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam, and Talhah ibn Ubaydullah—to choose the next caliph. After consultation among the Companions, Uthman ibn Affan was selected as the third caliph of the Muslim Ummah.
Some of his major achievements include:
1- The rapid expansion of the Islamic state into Persia, Greater Khorasan, parts of Anatolia, the Caucasus, and North Africa.
2- The compilation and standardization of the Qur’an. As the Islamic state expanded, many non-Arabic speakers entered Islam, and differences in Qur’anic recitation began to appear. Hudhayfah ibn Al-Yaman feared that these differences might lead to division among the Muslims, so he advised Uthman, saying: ”O Commander of the Faithful, save this nation before they differ concerning the Book of Allah as the Jews and Christians differed before them.” Uthman then requested the original manuscript so that official copies could be prepared. Several standardized copies of the Qur’an were produced and distributed across the Muslim provinces, including Iraq, Egypt, Persia, North Africa, and the Levant, while one copy remained in Madinah.
3- Expanding the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah to accommodate the growing number of Muslims.
After devotedly serving the Muslim Ummah as caliph and Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Uthman ibn Affan was martyred on Friday, the 18th of Dhul Hijjah, 35 AH, after the Asr prayer while he was fasting. He was buried in Al-Baqi Cemetery in Madinah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once made du‘a for him, saying, ”O Allah, be pleased with Uthman, for I am pleased with him.” May Allah be pleased with our master Uthman ibn Affan.
